Joshua Pennell is a lifelong explorer of technology, security, and the world around him. Best known for founding IOActive in 1998, Joshua has spent more than two decades shaping the direction of modern cybersecurity. Rather than being defined by the company, his career reflects a personal commitment to challenging assumptions, pushing boundaries, and helping organisations understand and reduce their digital risk. His work has influenced industry practices worldwide, and he remains respected for his strategic thinking, curiosity-driven research, and dedication to mentoring the next generation of security professionals.
Today, Joshua splits his time between guiding IOActive’s global presence and pursuing the projects and ideas that inspire him. Based in Monaco, he contributes to the broader security community through his involvement with the City of London Livery, his work as a Freemason, and his advisory roles within ISSA UK and several innovative start-ups.
Outside of cybersecurity, Joshua is driven by a spirit of adventure. He is an avid traveller, ski mountaineer, photographer, and offshore sailing enthusiast—interests that reflect his love of challenge, discovery, and the pursuit of new perspectives.
